Module 02
Semaphore
Two hand flags, eight arm positions, no equipment to fail. Semaphore is fast at close range and is still worked alongside during replenishment when radio silence is in force.
Lesson
How the positions are built
Each arm rests at one of eight points spaced 45 degrees apart, like the hours on a clock face. Every letter is a pair of those points, and no letter reuses a pair. All figures on this page are drawn as you would see them from the receiving ship — the signaller is facing you, so their right arm appears on your left. Read the angle of the arms, never the flags themselves.
